THIS WEEK IN PRIVACY: Unlucky CCTV cameras, Dangerous reading material

Pelham, New York resident Jared Crystal was nearly hit by a falling tree as punishment for reading the George Orwell book 1984, or so this reporter from Fox news seems to believe:

THIS WEEK IN PRIVACY: Big Brother, Emily Gould, Feline surveillance

Big Brother was in the news this week as politicians in the UK considered plans for a database that would log every single phone call and email. The announcement came nearly six months to the day after UK ministers apologized for losing another database containing the personal data of 25 million children.

Meanwhile, reality TV earned second place in a list of the worst inventions of all time in a UK poll, beating capital punishment handily, but losing out to the atom bomb by a narrow margin. In another poll, personal trainer Rebecca Morgan voted herself off of Australian Big Brother after deciding that sleeping in a communal bed with other housemates was a bit outside of her comfort zone.

New York Times Magazine editor Gerry Marzaroti ran a story about blogger Emily Gould and the perils of ‘oversharing’, saying it illuminated ‘how the Internet is re-describing how we understand privacy.

A new service in the UK will allow users to view surveillance footage of cats on their mobile phone.
